"Farm Sanctuary"
Gene Baur

This spring, I was invited to attend a luncheon that Kari Nienstedt, State Director for The Humane Society of the United States,
kneinstedt@humanesociety.org , put together at Green Restaurant in Scottsdale, to host a presentation by author and farm animal sanctuary founder, Gene Baur.

It was wonderful meeting Mr. Baur, and his talk was enlightening, funny and very well organized.  Baur spoke of his life before knowing the details of factory farming, and how, once informed, he set about to make a difference.  Baur is humble, admitting his own lack of understanding just how deeply animals feel in the beginning of his quest, and yet, he was also very confident in his ability to accomplish his goals of a sanctuary, as well as now informing others of just what is possible in our world.

Although a vegetarian, Baur does not propose that anyone else should become one.  Rather, his presentation was about the care and respect we need to have toward animals that are bred for human consumption.  He simply states that animals do not need to suffer just to provide sustenance for us.  And he is right.

His book is full of funny stories, and wonderful pieces about animals he has known and rescued.  We recommend it, and know you will be happy you read it.
